Artist Spotlight - Elizabeth Borowsky

Tell us a bit about yourself: Did you go to school for art? Are you self taught?
I am blessed to have a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from Clemson University.  I was taught the beauty of several different disciplines there - ceramics, painting, drawing, design, and sculpture.  My emphasis was actually in sculpture.

Do you work in just one medium? Several?
Right now, I am just working in one medium - CLAY!!!  But, that is only because of the limited amount of hours in a day.  Not only am I an artist, but also a mom of five children under the age of 12!  I love to draw, paint, and sculpt as well.

What inspires you / where do you get inspiration from?
I am ALWAYS inspired by cruising the web and looking at work from different artists that I admire.  I also get inspiration from textures, colors, forms, etc. that I see in my daily exploration of this beautiful world we live in.  You will never catch me anywhere without my sketchbook at arms reach to jot things down that I feel might make it into my work one day.

What are you working on now?
Right now I am happily stocking up on carved bowls, vases, mugs, spoons, etc., etc., etc.!! I sell my work at different art festivals and shows across South Carolina starting in April and ending in December.  My festival / show schedule is posted on my website: www.elizabethbceramics.com

Anything else you would like to share with us?
Having a first love of drawing, I am learning how to screen print some of my original drawings on to my clay surfaces.  Exciting! I hope to have a line of these wares by Spring / Summer 2016.

Are you an early riser? or night owl?
Naturally, I am neither an early riser or a night owl, but at this point in my life I do a little bit of BOTH! It all depends on what a day holds and what type of deadline I have. One thing always stays the same....in the morning, I am accompanied by a large mug of coffee with extra cream and sugar, and at night I am accompanied by a large smooth mug of chamomile tea!

What is your favorite food?
Coffee is a food, right?!?!

Fourth of July Fun

Happy Friday! Click photos to view larger.

Just a quick post on a bit of fun my daughter and I had lately. We on occasion go to a paint your own pottery place.

Above left is my 4th of July themed plate. I used a sponge to paint the blue and red stripes on the rim, just one coat. Then added a few dots by dipping the handle of my bush into the paint to make the dots. Painted the 3 stars by hand - two coats, three coats would help them be a brighter white on the blue.

My daughter painted memo tiles :-) I didn't watch her process as I was painting. She will put these up on her dorm room wall and use a dry erase marker to write memos. Cute!

All of you in the United States, have a happy and safe 4th of July! Thanks for stopping by,

Paint a Simple Pumpkin Mug

Visit your local paint your own pottery place

First I painted the inside white - you don't have to, but I wanted to be able to scrape off any blobs I didn't like easily. Let each step dry a bit to make things easier.

Next I painted the outside of the mug a light orange. Just one good coat - I wanted some of the brush strokes to show.

Then I mixed some of the darker orange in with the light orange paint and painted with a wide square brush vertical stripes on the mug - you can see the stripes bend a little with the pressure on the brush and that is OK :-D I just painted one coat of the mixed color of orange.

Now use a smaller brush - I like the square brushes for stripes. Use the darker orange paint to paint a stripe down the middle of the wider stripes you just painted.

Paint the handle black. 2 coats will work. black is a very strong color.

With a number 2 pencil, I lightly drew the face I want on the mug - Painted it black. 2 coats

I used an old tooth brush and splattered black paint on the inside and to make "blush" on my pumpkin face. Then I used a small round brush (you could use a 'writer bottle' too) and made the black drips that run from the rim of the mug down the inside a bit. There are a few blobs on the backside of the mug too.

Last thing I did was to use a round brush handle and dip the handle into the darker orange paint and made dots on the black handle of the mug :-)

Enjoy! - Make my day and follow my blog :-D Post a link or send me your Halloween pottery painting project. anntroe@cox.net

Pottery Painting - VW Bug Bank

I post pottery that my daughter and I have painted for fun :-) We go to our local "paint your own pottery" place where they fired the painted piece.

This is a VW Bug Bank. Banks make great gifts and you could personalize it with the person's name. Fun Fact: It easily holds $50 in change!

Thanks so much for reading my blog. Make my day and follow this blog!

Pottery Addiction

We Dig Painting Pottery!

Hey everybody. I have been getting a good response with the last two pottery post so thought I would share our latest creations! I will included links at the end if you want to see the older pottery posts.

I painted the ladybug bowl above. I used red sprinkles paint on the inside of the bowl just to mix it up a little. My daughter painted the mug and two bowls. She does like patterns! I like the handle of the mug. I haven't tried to blend colors on pottery, but that is one of her favorite things to do :-D

Pottery Painting Ideas - Nautical and Initial

Two Cute Ideas for Painting on Bisque
My daughter and I spent a wonderful afternoon painting at our local "paint your own pottery place". She painted the bowl on the left complete with a ship on the inside. The stripes on the rim are made by alternating with a wide square brush and a very thin brush. The waves are white paint squeezed from a small 'writer' bottle.

My small dish on the right has a base coat of speckled paint. I then lightly penciled in the letter "A", (the pencil burns off in the kiln). You can kind of see the pencil line in the before photo on the top right. I then dipped the brush handled into paint and made the larger dots in lots of colors. I didn't put any dots inside the letter A. Next I used a brush with a very small handle and made smaller dots. I put some of the smaller dots inside the large ones :-)
