Artist Spotlight - Irina Trzaskos

Tell us a bit about yourself: Did you go to school for art? Are you self taught?
Annie, thank you for the opportunity of being featured on your wonderful blog.
I have a degree in Interior design and I have painted and drawn since I can remember. During my school years I would go to after school art programs to paint because I was enjoying it so much. I always knew that my career would be somehow connected with art.

Do you work in just one medium? Several?
I mostly work in watercolor. It is my favorite medium since I was little. I was always exploring different mediums, and I am familiar with some software which makes life easier for me and my agent when I have to prepare my art for licensing.

What inspires you / where do you get inspiration from?
My main sources of inspiration are architecture, textiles, ceramics, theater, art history and crafts of different cultures. Beautiful color schemes are also very inspiring.

How did you start licensing your art?

When I moved to the US in 2012, I had to decide what direction my career should take; that is when I found out about art licensing. It took me several years to gain confidence, build a portfolio and as a result to look for and find an agent.

What are you working on now?
We just got back from a trip, and I have several projects going on: I am filming my next Skillshare class, developing new collection to submit to my art licensing portfolio and also I started to illustrate a book, my husband wrote.

Any great advice for our readers?
In art licensing, besides being creative it is very important to stay organized, have goals and constantly keep growing your portfolio, even if there are no specific assignments. I found my agent surprisingly easy – after I took watercolor classes I built a portfolio of 25+ art pieces , I picked my 5 favorite of them and started sending letters to licensing agencies I thought could be a good fit to represent my work. In a few days I got a letter from Art Licensing International.

Anything else you would like to share with us?
Besides creating art for licensing and teaching I love illustrating books. My husband writes fairytales and I illustrate them. It is our personal project we enjoy very much. Our books series is called Tales From a Magical Forest.

Are you an early riser? or night owl?
I always considered myself a night owl, but several years ago I noticed that I don’t like to work at night anymore and I really enjoy having breakfast with my husband instead of sleeping in ).

What is your favorite food?
It depends on season, I love seasonal fruits paired with different kind of cheeses. Also, I love fresh bakery items, a croissant and a cup of latte can make me instantly happy.

Behind the Scenes of Shake a Tail Feather Collection - answering a few art licensing questions

Answering a few of your questions

Happy Friday Creative Souls!
One of the most popular emails I get from all of you is how do you create art for licensing. I have done a couple of posts so you can get a peek behind the scenes of how I do it. (links at the end of this post). Here we are taking a peek behind the scenes of my "Shake a Tail Feather" collection. Please realize, there is no one way to do this! There are as many ways as their are artists. I know artist who paint complete paintings and do not set up mock ups or patterns. They may pull icons out of the finished painting.  I personally like having a lot of icons (a single rooster is an 'icon') to create different image combinations with. So I will paint in steps, then scan in the art after each step. Example: Paint the rooster first, scan in the computer, paint the background, scan in the finished painting. Sometimes I just paint a background to use.

Another question is how much work do I need to have before I get into licensing?
Gosh, there isn't a magic number. You could be a stunning floral painter and only need just a couple of paintings that catches a manufacturer's eye. I lean towards having several images and/or collections. That to me says you are serious, have more than one image to sell/make money on. Everyone including you wants to make money from your art. I think I had around 12 art collections before I started approaching agents. I also set up an art licensing website. It was my personal comfort level.
Finishing touches in Photoshop

Do I worry about not having just one style?
No :-) I primarily work in watercolor and acrylic. They dry fast! Some say I have a couple of styles. Some say that they can tell that all of it is my work. I like the idea of being able to offer a manufacturer a wider variety of art for their products.

Watercolor sample image

What programs do you use?
I am a Photoshop girl!, since I create my art by hand (not on the computer). I scan it in to the computer at high resolution, so that the image can be around 36 or more inches at 300 dpi. I may work in Illustrator down the road, right now I use Illustrator for logo design, some t-shirt design etc. depending on what my client needs. I use InDesign for magazine layout, newsletters and it works great for billboards etc.

Sprinkled through this post I am showing you some in progress photos of how I paint the "icons" first. Above, I lightened the dark brown background to get a different feel/color to the painting.

ArtLicensingShow.com is 1 Year Old! A lot has happened:

Editors note 4/18/2016. Joan Beiriger has a very comprehensive post on ArtLicensingShow.com here

Wow! Can you believe it has been a year since ArtLicensingShow.com (ALSC) launched?! I wanted to wish Cherish Flieder a great BIG Happy Birthday. THANK YOU for such an amazing site.  It has brought me opportunities/manufacturers I didn't know about and sped up my ability to connect with the wonderful art licensing community. Signed a contract to be announced and have another manufacturer shopping my art around to some big stores! This and more has happened for me because of ALSC :-D Here is a link to Valerie Hart talking about the new deals she has found though ALSC: http://artlicensingshow.com/conversation-valerie-hart/

I am one of many Founding Members and couldn't be more pleased or proud of what Cherish and her team have accomplished. This site has grown so fast in community and new features.

Here is a link to my ALSC profile page (Art Directors/Manufacturers, you can join for free!)
http://artlicensingshow.com/members/annietroe/profile/

Here are links to other artists on ALSC that are blogging about the 1 year celebration:

A year ago I posted why I am on ALSC - It has my yellow VW bug, "Daisy Doodle Bug".  I now have a new 2012 Red VW Bug, "Doug, the Doodle Bug". I have spotted Daisy in one of the mall parking lots the other day - hope she likes her new owner :-)

If you join or are a current member of ALSC, check out my "2nd Thursdays" group. We get together and talk about any questions you may have about the site, and all things Art Licensing :-D
http://artlicensingshow.com/groups/2nd-thursdays/

I am really excited about ArtLicensingShow.com being open 24/7, no airfare or hotel needed to exhibit my art. What do you love about ALSC?

NOTE! Feel free to leave your blog link in the comments below if you like.
Everyone, be sure to spread the love and check out all the blogs! Thanks.

Artist Spotlight - Dari Design Studio

Be sure to scroll down and enter to win one of 4 Dari Design Studio mini-journals!

Tell us a bit about yourself: Did you go to school for art? Are you self taught?
Well yes, both! Dariela: If there is one thing I’ve never doubted in my life that will be the fact that I wanted to be a designer. Actually I was already designing anything I could think of by the age of 9. I would draw, paint, make stationery sets and make name stickers for people to keep. By the time I was ready for college Graphic Design was a relatively new career in Venezuela. I never felt I belonged more than how I felt in those classes. It was as if the curriculum was made for me.

Dariana: Everything I know about design I owe it to my mom and my sister. My mom for exposing me to it, and emulating it to me. My sister for patiently teaching me and answering all of my questions for years. That being said I am a self-taught designer. I never went to design school. I hold a BA in Marketing and Advertising. Yet, I am a confirmed eternal student. Addicted to all sort of courses, classes, summits, conferences there could be for creative entrepreneurs.

Do you work in just one medium? Several?
We work in several mediums including both traditional paper and also digital. Our surface pattern designs are a blend of hand-drawn and digital motifs. Dariana has a special love for illustrating with watercolor and watercolor pens. Dariela is a photographer as well as a designer and illustrator artist. We both use Adobe Photoshop, a lot, and Dariela uses Illustrator too.

What inspires you / where do you get inspiration from?
We get our ideas and inspiration from a variety of sources. Dariana: In general I'm inspired by nature, especially animals and flowers. I love to be inspired by patterns and bright compositions. The mix of vintage and modern and all sorts of eye candy gets me really high into creative skies. I got used to working with an inspiration board where I mix some or all current trends I like.

Dariela: I am inspired by design, art and photography and by everyday life's moments. Sometimes I see a design draw itself in my mind just by watching my kids play or after admiring how the light comes in and shines on some objects, on some flowers or on people. Sometimes a delicious treat I'm eating inspires me to appreciate the moment so much I feel like designing with that treat as a subject.

What are you working on now?
That’s a great question! We are finally back to making art. For the last couple of months we’ve been focusing on the launch of our new website and all the associated marketing activities. That’s a big achievement for us and we were happy to celebrate it, but it’s also exhausting and we are both ready to create new work for licensing!

Also, we are putting the wraps on a new guide for artists to celebrate the empowering effect of kindness in the creative process. It’s called "Standout! – An illustrated and actionable Digital Guide for Artists.” We asked several industry experts to collaborate by providing tips and we are creating beautiful illustrations and actionable steps to accompany their tips. The guide will be available from our licensing website (www.artlicensingdesign.com) later this month. To get all the news about this project and receive this guide and more collaboration projects you can sign up for our mailing list here.

Any great advice for our readers?
This might not be a piece of advice but more a perspective of life that we think is worth sharing. Practicing mindfulness and awareness into our creative journey has brought pleasant results to our quality of life. Because when we manage to be aware of what’s happening, we are the observer and not the judge (that judges others or ourselves). We noticed something special happens when we are able to judge less and instead notice or stay curious more by embracing the observer role. Our creative juices and ideas stay handy. The creative process flows better. The passage through the “unknown dark phase” inherent to the creative process suddenly doesn't feel so uncomfortable.
Mindfulness can be practiced in many ways. I started by just searching for the word and finding plenty of information and exercises to include in my daily practice.

Anything else you would like to share with us?
Dariana: I would love to be your friend on Periscope and on Snapchat. I’m looking to connect (my word for 2016 is connect) with more creative entrepreneurs, artists and all kinds of caring and loving people this year. If you would like to get in touch with me just to say hi or to share something fun send me an email at dariana@daridesignstudio.com

Dariela: I also have a blog MamiTalks where I love to share my family life in English and Spanish. This is something that started when I had my first born (I have 2 kids now, the oldest is 9 y/o).  I love to keep it, through the years it has brought me friendships, new experiences and even new challenges in design and photography. MamiTalks is like my other casa in the world wide web!

Are you an early riser? or night owl?

Dariana: I am an early riser, but I used to be a night owl until 2 or 3 years ago.
Dariela: I am a night owl but I like to rise early too, LOL! I like to wake up early but not super early. Usually before all my family is up!

What is your favorite food?
Dariana: My favorite food is a good vibrant salad. I also love the traditional food from Venezuela.
Dariela: I love breakfast food! A good omelet with lots of veggies, toast with peanut butter.

Artist Spotlight - Kimberly Baxter Packwood

Tell us a bit about yourself: Did you go to school for art? Are you self-taught?
A little bit of both actually.  My aunt taught me how to stitch at the age of seven and my paternal grandmother taught me how to hand sew and use a treadle Singer sewing machine at the age of nine.  I continued to seek out different crafting techniques until the 1990’s when I switched my degree from Chemistry to Art Craft Design at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.

Do you work in just one medium? Several?
I’m a Mixed Media Fiber Artist and have recently started licensing my designs.

For the past twenty plus years I have worked with natural dyes, rust, earth pigments, and oxides on fabric which I then further embellish with hand and machine stitching.  My work depicts the prairie and plains both in ancient times and in modern times with corn as the unifying theme.

What inspires you / where do you get inspiration from?
I gather inspiration from where ever I am at the moment. My favorite place to visit is a natural marsh and native prairie north of Ames where migrating birds come to nest and feed every year.

I’m intrigued with the microscopic world of lichens, mosses, and liverworts; these lifeforms inform the base texture of each piece I create.  I spend a lot of time studying birds, cows, bison, corn, native plants, and the wind, which figures predominantly in my work.

What are you working on now?
Currently I am taking an online drawing class which has been a wonderful refresher, given that my last drawing class was some twenty years ago now.  It has caused an intense need to re-examine my work, the corn, crow, and bison pieces, so I’ve been drawing a lot recently exploring these subjects in a way that stitch doesn’t allow due to time and material constraints.

The other project I’ve been working on is mastering Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop so that I can digitize my original art into repeat patterns, and designs for fabric, paper, household goods, and the gift market.

Any great advice for our readers?
Advice No. 1:  Don’t be afraid to go back to the fundamentals of art.  Take a beginning drawing, painting, lettering, or design class.  There is much to learn again and now you will see it through the eyes of experience.

Advice No. 2: Observe.  Be still, listen, what do you hear, smell, taste, see, or feel?  All of this information informs your artwork, study it and your work will reflect this valuable information.

Anything else you would like to share with us?
Don’t give up! If at first you are told no, just keep asking!  It took two years from the time I submitted my first design to the time I saw my first royalty check.  Don’t give up, these things don’t happen overnight!!!

Are you an early riser or night owl?
I’m a Night Owl and have been for the better part of thirty years now, my best works occur late in the evening/night when there are no distractions like a ringing phone.

What is your favorite food?
My current favorite food is Sushi and Raman bowls the real stuff not the stuff in the package.

How I am Building an Art Licensing Portfolio

Happy Friday Creative Souls! (Click images to see them larger)

Before I start, there are always many ways to do something. I don't think my way is by any means the best way :-). Also, it is a safe bet in a year from now, I will be doing things differently. Based on feed back from my fabulous agent artsdg.com and a manufacturer, I just recently made adjustments! This is a great thing <3

I am heavily icon based in creating art. So what I mean by that is I only occasionally complete a painting with background and supporting images. Depending on the collection, I will paint a couple of different backgrounds (this one has some different color washes for backgrounds). I put the icons etc, together in photoshop. The upside is speed. I am just shy of creating a collection a month. The downside is I don't have a finished original painting to sell. Another upside is it is easier to isolate the images when their isn't a background to remove. The photo below was taken close to completion.

A collection for me means 4 - 6 central images. (There are 3 "images" above). 6 snowmen doing different things would be the main players of a snowman collection. For the above collection I painted supporting images: Swirls, 4 ladybugs, 3 dragonflies, 3 leaves and I think that was it. It varies with each collection. Some are much larger.

After I get the painting done and scan in all the art, next comes patterns & borders! In the beginning I would do fewer patterns. Now I am setting up a minimum of 6 patterns, with at least two colorways (I usually do 3-4 colorways). The patterns can take as long as the first stage of creating and scanning. I like to be sure to have some subtle and or small scale patterns to use as backgrounds/textures. Borders are great to set up. They can ad more interest to a product and make a stripe pattern or two.

Finally I set up a few product mocks and tear sheets. (Image at the top of this post). I like doing the mocks for a few reasons. It lets my agent know a few of the products I think the art will be fabulous on. It shows a few ideas of how to use the art. I like it because it makes the art 'real' for me and gets me jazzed to see it on all kinds of products. Something I have started more recently is setting up some 4" x 6" layouts (flags, greeting cards etc.) some 6"x4" (rugs, doormats, placemats etc.) and some Round designs. I am wondering if I should set up some squares too - Do any of you set up square designs?

The tear sheets are portfolio pages for me. I also use them to upload to ArtLicensingShow.com to speed the uploading of art. 4 or so tear sheets shows the majority of a collection, instead of taking the time to upload each individual image/pattern/mock.

I have a list of collection ideas. It is pretty long. For example, I have 12 ideas for winter/holiday. I may never get to them all, but I write ideas down when they pop in my head. Usually when I am wrapping up the patterns and creating mocks I am thinking about the next collection and sketching out what I will do next. If I don't get it down, it disappears from my brain :-)

How do you build your portfolio and any please share any tips you may have. Thank you for stopping by the blog. It really makes my day! Sign up for my newsletter if you don't want to miss anything.

Artist Spotlight - Fizah Malik

Tell us a bit about yourself: Did you go to school for art? Are you self taught?
I am a Textile/ Surface pattern designer based in Sydney, Australia. I grew up in Pakistan and hold a Masters Degree in Textile Design from the University of Punjab. I am currently doing my second Masters degree in Design from University of New South Wales ( Australia). I have been freelancing for almost 6 years now and after my Masters degree I did an in-house job for one year. I moved to Australia after that and had to start all over again in a new market which was completely new to me with no contacts.

I started finding work online and eventually got a few projects from Australian companies and have been working with the same companies even after 3 years. I work as a freelancer for Specialty Fashion Group, Homebodii and Mrs. Darcy in Australia. I am also a part of Laura Campion design studio(UK) , which I joined 6 months ago.

Do you work in just one medium? Several?
I experiment with all sorts of mediums including watercolours, inks, photography, gouache & digital design. Photoshop has been my companion for many years and I am a newbie when it comes to Illustrator but its growing on me now. Although I love making designs digitally and would love to buy a Wacom Cintiq someday but nothing can beat the feeling while drawing on a fresh piece of paper on your sketchbook, it feels so natural and has a flow to it that I really enjoy. After staring at the screen for several hours a day I like to step away from the computer and just draw!

What inspires you / where do you get inspiration from?
I have always been drawn to bold and bright colours, textures and detail. I think the beauty of the design lies in the detail and shows the commitment of the artist to that piece of art or pattern. Florals are my fav subject matter and nature gives me all the inspiration that I need.

Lately I have been drawn to fun and cute characters and have started taking interest in kids wear and  pattern design for kids and and I owe that to my 18 month old daughter.

What are you working on now?
I am currently doing an online course called Ultimate portfolio builder by Art of business and surface pattern design and trying to get a good body of work together to target towards the fabric/apparel industry. I am aiming to get licensing deals in the near future and exhibit at a show like Surtex or Printsource.

Besides this, I am doing a #100dayproject on Instagram these days. I upload a new pattern each day and will continue to do it for 100 consecutive days and it has not only helped me with my creative block but has exposed me to different opportunities. A Uk based company Flying Vinyl spotted me via Instagram and approached me to design the pattern for the Record sleeve for their company.
I also recently got the opportunity to be part of a new studio called Collective 12, which will feature the work of 12 artists working together and bringing their own unique style to the table and creating commercial surface designs for application on fashion, homewares, stationery and architecture. It's amazing that I was also discovered through Instagram for this project and was the 12th artist to join the team. This project will be launching in late July/August and I am very excited about it. This is why I love working as a freelancer because i am not limited to any space or city/country.

Anything else you would like to share with us?
I am grateful for all the opportunities that I have been getting lately. I have worked as a freelancer for many years now and always wanted to work on my own with no creative restraints. It's always rewarding to work as a solo artist and get recognised by your own unique signature style and that's what I am aiming for.

Are you an early riser? or night owl?
I am a night owl and have been that way since my uni days. I enjoy the utter silence after my baby goes to sleep and I get time to myself to paint or draw or simply relax.

What is your favorite food?
I am a complete foodie and I LOVEEE pasta. I can eat pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner provided I don’t have to deal with the calories later ;P

Tell us a bit about yourself: Did you go to school for art? Are you self taught?
I am a textile/ surface pattern designer based in Seattle, WA. I own a design studio called “Jyotsna Warikoo Designs” that offers unique and contemporary designs for a variety of industries. I grew up in India and graduated in Textile Design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology.

Do you work in just one medium? Several?
I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I love working with pencils, charcoal, water colors, watercolor pencils and Acrylic paints. I also like to digitally manipulate my drawings and patterns using tools like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

What inspires you / where do you get inspiration from?
I draw a lot of inspiration from the multicultural mix, craftsmanship and textiles of my East Indian roots. I love pop and modern art for its optimism and work to combine my love for modern aesthetics with the beauty of folk design…..modern meets folk, trendy meets beautiful.  I also draw a lot of inspiration from nature and birds have a very special place in my heart.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on building collections for art licensing especially targeted towards the gift and stationery industry. Besides this, I am also working on creating modern print collections targeted towards the kids/ baby product market. I am planning to exhibit my work at Surtex 2016 and would love to connect with like-minded designers to collaborate and work together as a collective.

Anything else you would like to share with us?
I have been working in the industry for many years now however I consider myself new to the world of art licensing. As I start to make inroads, I really appreciate the support and feedback from the design community. It is wonderful to be part of such a warm hearted and supportive group of creative souls. A very special thanks to you Ann for including me in your blog as well.

Are you an early riser? or night owl?
I love early mornings…the smell of fresh air, the soft chirping of the birds and the beautiful dim light at dawn. And I equally enjoy the quiet and calmness of working at night. When I am working on something that really excites me, time just flies.

What is your favorite food?
I love to cook and eat. I am a vegetarian and love eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables. If it’s good for me, it will taste good to me too ☺
